Having managed large, animal resource programs for over 40 y, I have a clear understanding of the complexities and costs of maintaining the various species commonly used as animal models. While the zebrafish model offers a host of well-recognized advantages, the issue of the cost of their maintenance is complex and incompletely understood by many involved in their care or use. Our program operates zebrafish core facilities that are wholly managed by dedicated animal resource program staff and our aim is to recover most operational costs as we do for other species.
